Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s first directorial venture Otta, starring Asif Ali, is gearing up for its theatrical release on October 27. The film is based on the life of S Hariharan, a businessman who founded NGOs to support children who run away from home due to various problems. The makers recently released the film’s trailer, hinting at a gripping social drama about ‘toxic parents’ who compel children to leave their homes. The teaser, which was released earlier, also conveyed a similar vibe. The movie also features Arjun Ashokan, Indrajith Sukumaran, Rohini Molleti and Sathyaraj in pivotal roles.

Asif Ali-starrer Otta dabbles in a socially relevant theme

The trailer of Otta features Asif and Arjun as close friends. It is evident that they both have family issues. While Asif’s father, played by Sathyaraj, is harsh on him, Arjun is also facing conflicts with his parents. Thus, both friends decide to leave their respective homes and end up at a place where they are forced to become labourers.

The plot explores the dynamics of parent-child relationships and ‘toxic’ parenting. Towards the end of the trailer, there is a scene in which a mother is shown feeding her child. But when he refuses to eat, she scares him by saying that his father will arrive anytime soon.

Otta’s cast and crew

The film’s ensemble cast also includes actors Indrans, Renji Panicker, Jayaprakash, Jayakrishnan, Bhavana Ramana, Devi, Mamta Mohandas, Vinay and Divya Dutta.

Otta marks acclaimed sound designer Resul’s directorial debut. He won the Academy Award in 2009 under the ‘Best Sound Mixing’ category for Slumdog Millionaire.

Otta was initially scheduled to be released in September, but was postponed due to unfinished post-production work. The technical crew includes Arun Varma (as the cinematographer) and Zian Sreekanth (as the editor). Scripted by Kiron Prabhakar, Otta is bankrolled by Resul Pookutty Productions and Children Reunited LLP.
