The Batman, which is directed by Matt Reeves, has captured the attention of the fans since its announcement. While this is expected for a Batman movie, the dark theme and Robert Pattinson as The Caped Crusader has helped this cause.
In an interview with Empire, Reeves has revealed an interesting detail that makes Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne different from the ones that have come before. The filmmaker has stated that Bruce Wayne is inspired by rock and roll icon and Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain.
“That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse.” said Reeves after admitting her wrote the first act of the film listening to Nirvana’s Something’s in The Way.
He added that he made the connection to Last Days, Gus Van Sant’s fictionalized drama based on the singer's life, and an idea of this version of Cobain in a decaying manner.
In the first trailer for The Batman, which came out in August 2020, as Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon reads out one of The Riddler’s riddles, Nirvana’s Something’s in the Way played in the background, setting a world that Reeves is known for today.
Reeves also says that unlike the past live action representations of the rich orphan, Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is not the socialite, playboy figure, but a man who is holed up by himself and is finding ways to improve on his suit and gizmos.
Co-starring Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, and Paul Dano, the movie is set to hit theatres on March 4, 2022.
