Poised for the release of her new OTT outing - Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo - in which she’ll be seen playing an unapologetically hardcore mother-in-law leading a family of tenacious younger women to run a drug cartel in a remote village, acclaimed actress Dimple Kapadia says that she is happy to see female characters finally evolving in films and shows.

Slated to start streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from May 5, the Homi Adajania-directed crime drama television series also features Radhika Madan, Isha Talwar, Angira Dhar, Deepak Dobriyal, Monica Dogra and Naseeruddin Shah in pivotal roles.

According to Dimple - who was recently seen playing a central character in Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan - it’s high time we stop calling films and series male-centric or female-centric. “These are stories in itself, irrespective of the gender of the lead cast, they are stories beyond gender, region and cultures that need to be spoken about and celebrated,” the National Award-winning actress said in a recent interview with IANS

That said, she is also thrilled that stories with dynamic female relationships are evolving and we are seeing women in new characters in every form. “Moving beyond the quintessential heroine, today’s female characters have their own flaws, they are much more layered and are now even doing action, just like men in Saas Bahu aur Flamingo,” Dimple elaborated.

The actress finds it more important to tell stories that reflect the diversity of the country - whether it is women, cultures or regions, she feels that the current entertainment landscape is working towards that direction. “I am super excited to see how this shapes out for me as an actor,” she added.
