Dulquer Salmaan’s first direct-to-OTT release Salute promises to be different from the thrillers that he has been part of in his decade-old career. The movie marks the return of director Rosshan Andrrews and scriptwriters Bobby and Sanjay to the genre, after the critically acclaimed Mumbai Police, and that should add to the expectations of the film.

While it was set for a theatrical release on January 14 and was postponed due to the Omicron threat, its OTT release on March 18 should work in its favour, considering the star’s pan-Indian following, the audience’s preference for thrillers in the digital space and that the movie will be available in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi.

Despite the movie completing its filming last year, the makers have successfully managed to keep its plot under wraps, revealing only that Dulquer will be playing a cop named Aravind Karunakaran in the film, which also has Manoj K Jayan essaying the role of his elder brother and senior officer.

However, the teasers leading up to the film’s release give us a clearer picture on what the movie is, its tone and setting, and from what we know so far, it’s unlike anything Dulquer has done before.

An upright policeman

While the first teaser back in 2020 revealed Dulquer’s character as someone new to job and almost mirrored his anxiousness, the latest shows that he is willing to stand up for what’s right and also finds his own voice. The film will also have some thumping action scenes. Abhiram Radhakrishnan and Deepak Parambol play cops who assist him with the investigation.

A case without clues

It seems that Aravind Karunakaran is investigating a case that has gone cold due to the lack of evidence. However, three years later, he does seem to have gathered a clue that helps him in reopening the case.

A cop obsessed with solving the case

The trailer of the film had Diana Penty’s character ask Dulquer’s if their happiness is more important to him. It also shows that Aravind is obsessed with solving the case even years later. We also get to hear his colleagues say that he is yet to let go of the case, while Ganapathy’s character asks him if he has returned to service, hinting that something has happened during the initial investigation till the time he reopens the case.

A relentless pursuit for an elusive criminal

The latest teaser drops hints that a suspect has been apprehended whom Aravind doesn’t think has committed the crime. He carries on the probe but seems to hit dead ends at every turn, and the lack of progress in the investigation is also questioned by the senior officer, who perceives it as inefficiency.
