Debutant Franklin Jacob's Writer, starring Samuthirakani in the lead which released a month ago in theatres, had opened to positive reviews from critics. The movie, however, didn't perform as expected at the box office. Pa Ranjith's Neelam Productions was one of the producers of the project.
The movie was lauded for its undiluted portrayal of corruption and cooked-up cases which are rampant among the day-to-day professional lives of cops. Samuthirakani's performance as a good-hearted, but helpless constable was one of the prime highlights of the hard-hitting film. Writer also touched upon the need to have a union for police officers to address their issues.
The other day, the film was in the news when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin announced the formation of a committee under the leadership of a retired judge to strengthen the relationship between police and public, and to look into the grievances of police officers.
Samuthirakani had taken to his social media page to express happiness over the government's decision and said the sudden move was based on the film's impact. The actor-filmmaker's fans were all praise for him for headlining an important movie which spoke about several social issues.
The latest on the film is that is digital rights have been sold to a new platform. We hear that Aha Tamil, which is said to be launching soon, has bagged the movie's OTT rights. According to a source, the movie will start premiering on the platform soon after its launch.
Sarath Kumar's Irai, a web series which is billed as a crime thriller, is another project which the platform had bagged recently. It is heard that the Tamil version of the leading Telugu digital platform has bought the rights of a few other Kollywood movies, too.
