Sangeetha Bhat: Kamal Sridevi is the ray of hope my career needed

Sangeetha Bhat, who grabbed the attention of Kannada audiences with films like Eradane Sala, Dayavittu Gamanisi, Kapata Nataka Patradhaari, among others, was on a self-imposed break from the industry, having moved out of the country for a while. Since her return to India and best efforts to find a footing in Kannada cinema again, it’s not yielded much result.

Sangeetha Bhat: When a good character comes by, grab it by the neck

“It’s been a while since I have had a film in theatres. There was a film called Klaantha that came out in 2023, but it’s very rare that I get characters that allow me to flex my acting chops and show audiences my full potential as an actress. Kamal Sridevi is the ray of hope that my career needed,” says Sangeetha, in conversation with Kannada Pichhar.

She adds, “As actors, the hope is always to get a good character or film and when that comes your way, I’ve learnt to grab it by its neck. Even though I was away from the Kannada film industry for a while and haven’t made much inroads since announcing my comeback, Rajvardhan, who has co-produced Kamal Sridevi, remembered me and thought I’d be apt for the role.”

In the film, Sangeetha is one of the title characters, Sridevi, with the narrative revolving around her, an opportunity that she acknowledges is rare for female artistes. “You need to be lucky to get such roles, but then, what’s more important is whether or not I am capable to do justice to the role. I took it as a challenge to not only give it my best, but to also ensure my work makes it easy for the rest of the cast to do their bit,” she added.

Directed by Sunil Kumar, Kamal Sridevi, which releases on September 19, also stars Sachin Cheluvarayaswamy, Kishore, Ramesh Indira, Akshitha Bopaiah, among others.
