Known for playing some really interesting characters since she made her debut in 2016 with Aamir Khan’s Dangal, Sanya Malhotra is poised for yet another intriguing release. Unveiled as part of Jio Studios’ slate of more than 100 films and original web series in multiple languages at a glittery event in Mumbai on Wednesday, the actress’ upcoming film is an Arati Kadav directorial, titled Mrs., which is made in collaboration with producer Harman Baweja.
Mrs. is the Hindi remake of writer-director Jeo Baby’s critically acclaimed Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, which is currently streaming on ZEE5. Released in January 2021, the movie follows the journey of a newly married woman (played by Nimisha Sajayan), who is expected to be the submissive wife to her husband (essayed by Suraj Venjaramood) and his family, and basically toil in the kitchen all day. The storyline sheds light on several aspects of a typical Indian household - misogyny, sexism and the gendered nature of domestic labour. The Great Indian Kitchen won the Kerala State Film Award for ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Screenplay’, among others.
In Mrs. Sanya Malhotra will be reprising the character of Nimisha from the original film. Sharing her joy in being part of this film, Sanya had earlier said, “As an actor, I could not have asked for a better character than I would essay in The Great Indian Kitchen. I am more than excited to start working on my role because there are so many layers and nuances to it.” Mrs. also features veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh.
Arati - who is known for making films like Cargo and The Astronaut and His Parrot, earlier said, “It is one of the most tightly written scripts I have come across, and I am all set to add my voice to the drama.”
In the past, Sanya has garnered appreciation for her performance in films like Photograph (2019), Ludo (2020), Shakuntala Devi (2020), Pagglait (2021) and Love Hostel (2022).
