This year was special for Karthi in various ways. He got to play the iconic Vanthiyathevan character from Kalki's epic novel Ponniyin Selvan in Mani Ratnam's magnum opus which was released with the same title. He also had three hits in 2022, with each of them belonging to different genres.

While Viruman, a rural drama, impressed its target audience, Ponniyin Selvan became the highest grossing film in Tamil Nadu. His third outing Sardar, which hit the screens in October as a Deepavali release, too, emerged successful at the box office.

The PS Mithran directorial has Karthi essaying dual roles for the second time in his career. Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan essay female lead roles in the movie which is a spy thriller. Munishkanth, Laila and Chunky Panday among others are seen as notable characters.

The fast-paced screenplay, Karthi's convincing performance and engaging plot are major reasons which hooked the audience, making the film the Deepavali winner this year. Sardar outsmarted Sivakarthikeyan's Prince which was released in theatres on the same day in terms of critics' response and box office performance.

Sardar is now ready for its digital premiere. The movie will drop on aha Tamil on November 18. The news of the platform acquiring the film's OTT rights was out long ago. People who couldn't watch the film in theatres have been waiting to catch up with the movie after its OTT premiere.

Its makers had announced recently that the project has entered the coveted 100 crore club. The film becomes Karthi's third movie to achieve the feat after Kaithi and Ponniyin Selvan 1. A sequel to the film is also in the pipeline, though makers are yet to reveal their plans on its commencement.
