Season 2 of Showtrial is gearing up for its OTT release in India. Ben Richards conceived the British judicial drama series, and the second season will launch on Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium) on December 13, 2024. Tracy Ifeachor and Céline Buckens were the stars of the inaugural series, which ran for five episodes on BBC One in 2020. News emerged after a couple of years, revealing a reimagined Showtrial as an anthology series featuring a new cast for its second season. The second season, which ran from October to November of 2024, included Michael Socha, Nathalie Armin, and Adeel Akhtar.
In the first season, the apprehending of Talitha Campbell, the haughty daughter of a rich businessman named Sir Damian Campbell, follows the disappearance of fellow student Hannah Ellis, the diligent daughter of a single mother. From Talitha's arrest to the jury's conviction, Showtrial cuts between the prosecution's and defence's perspectives on the case, as they contend with the reality of Talitha—was she wrongfully accused or a heartless killer?—and Hannah's situation.
In the second season, Marcus Calderwood, a prominent environmentalist, identifies the assailant as a serving police officer in his final moments, following a brutal hit-and-run that left him for dead. The show brings to life characters such as haughty police officer Justin Mitchell, nervous defense lawyer Sam Malik, and tough prosecutor Leila Hassoun-Kenny.
The first series divided critics. Reviewers panned the work for its hurried pace, lack of nuance, and poor writing. However, critics praised the structure, the emotional moments, and Buckens' performance. In addition to the International Emmy for Best Actress and the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress, Buckens received other nominations for her performance as Talitha Campbell.
Writer and creator Ben Richards expressed his gratitude to the BBC for the chance to delve into another thrilling trial, expressing his hope that it will live up to the first installment's fascinating quality. Having a cast of this calibre perform Showtrial is an honor, and he enjoys writing the script.
