Skanda, Ram Pothineni’s pan-Indian film, had limited promotions leading to its release on September 28. Given the ability of the actor and the director Boyapati Sreenu to draw masses to theatres, it was always expected to open well in Telugu irrespective of the reviews. Most critics had panned the film yesterday, but the box office collections on day 1 across Telugu states tells a very different story.
The film has managed to collect a share of Rs 8.62 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Nizam region is the biggest contributor in the collections, garnering Rs 3.23 crore, helping it find a place among the top Telugu films that have opened well in Telangana in 2023. In the ceded and Uttarandhra areas, the film went onto collect approximately Rs 1.20 crore each.
The Boyapati directorial earned a little over Rs 1 crore in both the Godavari regions (East and West) and Guntur. The film amassed Rs 45 lakhs and Rs 49 lakhs in Krishna and Nellore districts. Skanda could only put up a modest show in other languages and regions (beyond Telugu) - the gross collections on the whole in India across all languages are Rs 18.20 crore.
In the US, as per the latest update, Skanda managed a decent $1,81,013 (gross) from the premieres and day 1 collections (with some locations yet to be reported). This is an encouraging sign for team Skanda with a long weekend ahead. Another that could work in its favour - the film’s biggest competitor in Telugu states, Chandramukhi 2, didn’t register an impressive opening.
Sreeleela, Saiee Manjrekar played the female leads in Skanda which also starred Srikanth, Raja Daggubati, Indraja, Gauthami, Sharath Lohithaswa and others in key roles. The film was bankrolled by Srinivasaa Chitturi under Srinivasaa Silver Screen. S Thaman scored the music while Santosh Detake cranked the camera. Tammiraju edited the film. Disney+ Hotstar acquired the film’s OTT rights.
