The tug of war between South and North India is not new, and this dynamic has often been reflected in their respective film industries. Over the years, the lines between these industries have blurred considerably, but the North vs. South debate still surfaces occasionally. A recent example arose when Naga Vamsi, the producer of the Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor-led Devara, made controversial remarks about the Hindi film industry (Bollywood). He claimed that Bollywood primarily makes movies catering to audiences in Bandra and Juhu. The comment stirred debate, leading Maddock Pictures’ head, Dinesh Vijan, to address the issue with a balanced and logical response.

Dinesh Vijan Reacts to Naga Vamsi’s Comments

For context, Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Pictures has been one of the most successful production houses, boasting a high return on investment. Last year, the studio delivered a massive hit with Stree 2, dominating the box office. Vijan responded to Vamsi's comments during the trailer launch of his film Sky Force, starring Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, and Sara Ali Khan. He emphasized the importance of viewing the film industry as a collective entity—Indian cinema—rather than separate North and South factions.

Vijan highlighted that Bollywood has achieved significant milestones, with five Hindi films surpassing the ₹500 crore mark. He said, "Maybe we don’t speak enough about ourselves, but the fact remains: we’ve had five huge films. Maddock Films or Jio Studios alone cannot run the industry. There might be 1–2 individuals with differing opinions, but every time I’ve interacted with South industry peers, they’ve been very encouraging."

He further elaborated on the combined potential of Indian cinema, stating, "If we start viewing it as one industry, it’s 500 + 800 = ₹1,300 crore," a logical and optimistic outlook. Akshay Kumar, who was present at the event, supported Vijan’s perspective.

Context of Naga Vamsi’s Statement

For those unfamiliar, Naga Vamsi, alongside Boney Kapoor, participated in a producers’ roundtable by Galatta Plus. During the discussion on South cinema’s dominance in overseas markets, Vamsi remarked on how the South has influenced Bollywood’s approach to filmmaking. He asserted, "Bollywood was stuck making films for Bandra and Juhu," and credited movies like Baahubali, Animal, Jawan, and RRR for transforming industry dynamics.
