For almost five years, there have been questions about which actor will play Sourav Ganguly. However, the answer to this question has been a hot topic ever since the former Indian cricket captain announced plans for a biopic in 2021. Over the years, Ayushmann Khurrana and Ranbir Kapoor have been mentioned as possible candidates for the role, with rumours surrounding them increasing earlier this year. Now, it's almost fixed that the Dream Girl 2 actor will be working with director Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth on the biopic, and as per the latest reports, the filming will begin in December.

Ayushmann Khurrana confirmed for the Sourav Ganguly biopic

As per reports in Mid Day, taking on the role of one of India's most victorious captains won't be simple, and the actor will have to put in work to emulate Ganguly in everything from his batting stance to his ability to smash off-side home runs. The tabloid suggested that Ayushmann has a leg-side edge because he, too, is a left-handed batter.

Ganguly's involvement

A source told the tabloid that Ayushmann will begin training next month in Mumbai, giving him over two months to prep for the role before the project goes on floors in December. Meanwhile, Ganguly is claimed to have already met the main man due to his extensive involvement with the Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg production. Whether the first schedule would be shot in Mumbai or in Kolkata, where the ex-cricketer grew up, remains to be seen.

Biopic development timeline

Earlier this year, it was reported that the Sourav Ganguly biopic is now getting made, around two years after the first news about it surfaced. Ayushmann is reportedly in early talks with producers Ranjan and Garg to play the former Indian cricket captain. The actor's left-handed batting style, like Ganguly's, is another reason the producers are optimistic about him.

Back in May 2023, the actor had yet to sign the contract since a few details had to be ironed out. Ayushmann will immediately begin preparing to play the Indian cricket legend on screen once the necessary documentation is finalised. The film's original director, Vikramaditya Motwane, turned down the job.
