Gi-hun is back on Netflix with the first teaser for the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game. The new 30-second teaser portrays a succession of nameless competitors donning green tracksuits, with Lee Jung-jae returning as Seong Gi-hun, the champion and lone survivor from Season 1.
In the brightly lit preview, we see the numbers on the back of the players' jackets, starting with #1 and progressing to #456 for Gi-hun. Three years after winning Squid Game, Gi-hun returns to Season 2 with a new resolve, having abandoned his plans to relocate to the United States. With fresh recruits in tow, he jumps back into the enigmatic survival game for a second go at winning the 45.6 billion won jackpot.
According to what creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has already told Deadline, Gi-hun will be taking a more serious and determined stance in the upcoming season as he seeks revenge.
When Dong-hyuk won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing of a Drama Series for the pilot, he became the first Asian person to do so. In addition to being the first non-English show to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Jung-jae became the first Asian male to do so.
Emmy winner aside from directing and writing, Hwang also acts as an executive producer. He became the first Asian director to ever win the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series award at the 74th Primetime Emmys. He gave fans a sneak peek at Season 2 in a June 2022 letter.
In a 2022 interview with Tudum, Kim admitted that there was a tremendous deal of expectation for Season 2. He understands that the series has brought great pleasure to many viewers and fans, but their true focus is on finding ways to bring even more joy to viewers worldwide.
With a record 1.65 billion views in the first 28 days after its 2021 premiere, Squid Game also became the most popular series of all time on Netflix.
Squid Game's second season will debut on December 26, and last month, Netflix said that the third and final season will follow in 2025.
