Many of us have either finished or at least watched part of Squid Game season 2, undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows of the year. Released by the end of 2024, this season has been buzzing for good reason. The story picks up right where the first season left off, putting Gi-hun into an even more dangerous and complex situation. As the finale unfolds and Gi-hun starts a rebellion with his team, it becomes clear that the season is heading toward a tragic conclusion, leaving many unresolved issues for Squid Game season 3. Yes, a third season is confirmed, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared new insights about what to expect.
If you haven’t already, make sure not to skip the credits at the end of Squid Game season 2. There’s a mid-credit scene that teases the upcoming season, setting up season 3 and confirming the show’s return in late 2025. Hwang Dong-hyuk has now revealed that Seong Gi-hun will be a very different person in the next season. Here's everything you need to know.
In an interview with Variety, Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed when to expect Squid Game season 3 and what we might see. He shared, “At this point, anything I say could be a spoiler, so I’ll be cautious. But after Season 2 airs, I believe we’ll announce the launch date for Season 3 soon. It will probably be released around summer or fall next year.”
When talking about the storyline of the third season, he added, “Gi-hun has lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts have failed. Now, the question is, what kind of person will he be? What will his state be like? What will he choose to do? Will he continue his mission? Will he give up or persist? Gi-hun will be at a critical crossroads when Season 3 begins. He won’t be the same man he was in Season 2.”
After the credits of the finale, a mid-credit scene appears, showing players 096, 100, and 353 entering the “Red Light, Green Light” game, now set against a new sunset backdrop. Player 100, as you may recall, was the man with a 10 billion won debt, who was most eager to continue the game, aligning with the O group. The players look at the giant Young-hee doll, which now seems very different. But then, a new male doll enters the scene, staring at Young-hee. As the light turns green, we are left with the promise of a season 3.
This scene hints at several possibilities. It’s possible that the Front Man has kept the game going by capturing Gi-hun. The challenges might become even deadlier for the players, and there’s also a chance that a new team dynamic could be introduced, such as an X team vs. O team rivalry, adding further drama to the field, not just the dorms. There are endless potential storylines, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Hwang Dong-hyuk also spoke to Variety about the mid-credit scene, saying, “If you watched the hidden clip after the credits roll at the end of Season 2, it will give you a slight hint about where Season 3 might go. That’s all I can say for now.”
