The highly anticipated Student of the Year 3 (SOTY 3), produced by Karan Johar and starring Shanaya Kapoor, is finally set to go on floors later this month. Breaking with convention, the third instalment of the beloved university drama series will premiere as a web series instead of a theatrical release.
Midday has learnt that production for SOTY 3 will begin in Mumbai on April 20. According to an insider, the series has been in the works for the previous six years. The team is planning to start filming on April 20 now that Johar has given the go-ahead. With a little over 30 days to film all six episodes, the schedule is tight.
Both the actors and the creative director of this edition inject new life into the show. The six-part series will be Reema Maya's first foray into directing; her short film Nocturnal Burger was a festival smash in 2023. The makers may anticipate that the filmmaker's singular sensibility will imbue the often glitzy franchise with a distinct voice.
The shelving of her debut film Bedhadak and the delay of SOTY 3 allowed the young newcomer to focus on other projects. After signing on for the bilingual Malayalam-Telugu film Vrushabha with Mohanlal, she went on to work opposite Vikrant Massey (last seen in The Sabarmati Report) in the romantic drama Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan and will also appear in Tu Yaa Main by Bejoy Nambiar. Together, they will make Kapoor's SOTY 3 her fourth production and her first for streaming services. All her projects are yet to get a release date.
Kapoor will play two roles, a first for any leading character in the SOTY universe, giving the franchise a new twist.
Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra were propelled to stardom in the 2012 original Student of the Year thanks to Johar's Dharma Productions. Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria joined Tiger Shroff in the lead roles of the 2019 Punit Malhotra-directed sequel.
The new series will bring the franchise's long history of showcasing up-and-coming talent to the digital realm, and it will likely debut on JioHotstar.
