Su from So box office: Raj B Shetty’s production set to better record of first four days on Day 5

A few weeks ago, no one knew of a film called Su From So. Then, actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty, who’s not been seen in Kannada cinema since the anthology Roopanthara, hinted that his team had been busy working on a film that was ready for audiences. It was called Su from So and was directed by JP Thuminad, whom audiences knew best as Priya’s husband Deepak in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B. They dropped a peppy dance number first, which they followed with a trailer and the film itself, shortly after, and what happened thereafter is what audiences like to say these days – ‘it came out of syllabus’.

The totally unexpected film has been setting box office records for a project by a relatively newbie team. Su from So has recorded 413K ticket sales on an aggregator site only, excluding direct counter purchases, in its first four days only, with including a whopping 100K+ on its first Monday, despite it being a working day. In fact, the prediction for Tuesday (July 29) is that the ticket sales will be even better than on Monday, which, those in trade circles say is largely due to the fact that weekday multiplex rates have dropped, while single-screens have consistently maintained prices around Rs 150.

According to trade tracking site sacnilk.com, Su From So has clocked a little over Rs 10 crore net in its first four days, with another Rs 3-4 crore expected to be added on Day 5. Netizens have been predicting a Rs 25 crore lifetime collection for the film, which is a modest estimation, considering that Su From So will release with a dubbed Malayalam version on August 1, followed by Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions in the days to come. Kannada films with good word-of-mouth have traditionally done well in Malayalam and Telugu.

Raj has a fan following in Kerala, so, the expectation is that Su From So will be widely accepted in that market as well. Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films is distributing the film, which stars JP Thuminad, Shaneel Gautham, Prakash Thuminad, Deepak Rai Panaje, Mime Ramadas, Raj B Shetty, Sandhya Arekere, among other.
