Su from So director-producer duo, JP Thuminad and Raj B Shetty, are long time collaborators

The Kannada horror comedy Su From So marks the directorial debut of Tulu theatre artist and director JP Thuminad, who until not long ago, was best known as Deepak in Hemanth M Rao’s Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B, the man eventually married to Rukmini Vasanth’s Priya. Su From So has been produced by Raj B Shetty, a collaboration that both say has been in the works for many years.

JP and Raj B Shetty go back a long way

JP Thuminad had met Raj even before the latter turned actor-filmmaker with Ondu Motteya Kathe. So, when Raj made his directorial debut, JP not only found a role in the film, but on the former’s team as well. Thereafter, JP was also a part of Raj’s directorials Toby and Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, but he maintains that acting’s a journey he’s been on as part of his end goal to be a filmmaker.

In fact, JP’s filmmaking journey was meant to begin a lot earlier, when Raj asked him to adapt a book as a script. Eventually, it did not pan out and someone else made that film, but Raj constantly kept egging JP on to write the stories that he’d randomly narrate to people around him and develop them as scripts. One of them was Su From So, which Raj asked JP to make a tonal shift and have it as a complete comedy and that decision has now paid off rich dividends.

After 6 days at the box office, Su From So has, reportedly, made close to Rs 17 cr in net theatrical collections from its Kannada version only. The film’s overseas release begins on August 1, as also its Malayalam dubbed version. On August 7, Mythri Movie Makers will release the Telugu dubbed version, while Anil Thadani has picked up the Hindi distribution, a date for which is yet to be decided.
