Su From So headed to OTT: Here’s why JP Thuminad’s superhit comedy is a must watch

Su From So, the superhit comedy film, which currently enjoys the honour of being the highest grossing Kannada movie of 2025, is set to drop on OTT after a very successful theatrical run. A month before its theatrical release on July 25, hardly anyone even knew of a film called Su From So. In October 2024, actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty had shared images from the muhurtha of a new production venture, but provided no other details. It was only on June 21, 2025, that he officially announced the project to the world with a first look poster that grabbed eyeballs.

Only days later, a lyrical video of a very peppy dance number, the Danks Anthem, came out, featuring key characters in a drunken revelry and busting killer moves. And then came the trailer, which introduced the world of Su From So to audiences. Only a handful of promotional interviews later, Raj took the film to audiences, preferring the content to do the talking, rather than the cast and crew.

In the week before the theatrical release, he had paid premieres across several cities, the response from which was overwhelmingly positive, and word spread like wildfire – Su From So is a must-watch in theatres. Audiences wasted no time and made a beeline for their nearest movie halls, and turned the JP Thuminad directorial into a money-spinner. Made at a modest budget of around Rs 4.5 crore, with another Rs 1.5 cr spent on promotions and release-related expenses, Su From So has made around Rs 121 crore net in just over 40 days at the box office.

Small and simple setting

Su From So is set in a small village, Marlur, and revolves around a bunch of characters – Ravi Anna (Shaneel Gautham), the local contractor, who is also the man everyone in Marlur turns to solve every other issue in town, Ashoka (JP Thuminad), a painter who gets possessed, Yadhu (Mime Ramadas) a former banker and wannabe village head, Chandra (Prakash Thuminad), an autodriver and Sathisha (Deepak Rai Panaje), Ravi Anna’s right-hand man, among others.

A comedy disguised as a ‘horror’ comedy

Su From So was marketed as a horror comedy, but this one is not about a haunted mansion, unexplained sounds and events, or jumpscares. The horror here is that a Marlur native gets possessed by a spirit from a neighbouring village, Someshwara, and the chaos that ensues from how that torments the residents of Marlur.

Fresh cast

Although all the actors in Su From So are each a few films old, they’ve largely stayed in the background. Su From So puts them all in the spotlight, whether it is Shaneel, Sandhya Arekere, JP Thuminad, etc.

A secret well kept

Prior to the release, there were rumours that Raj was a part of the cast, which he’d denied. There was no mention of him from the paid premieres either. Once the film released across the state, word spread that he played a pivotal role, as Karunakar guruji, who’s called in to lead the exorcism of Prakasha and rid him of Sulochana From Someshwara.

Not just laughs, there’s thought-provoking content too

The humour in Su From So is very situational, that comes from the reactions to Ashoka’s situation. But this is a situation that he’s brought on himself, when he pretends to be possessed to get himself out of a mess. Ashoka’s possession becomes an eye-opener for him about the perils of his behaviour.
