Su From So, the blockbuster Kannada comedy, produced by actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty and written and directed by JP Thuminad, dropped on JioHotstar (via OTTplay Premium also) on September 9. The film, which is still in select movie halls and continued drawing crowds in its 7thweekend, was among the most widely searched for titles from the time its streaming debut was speculated. Once it dropped on the platform, though, the response to it has been surprisingly divided.

Su From So had received overwhelmingly positive reviews both in Karnataka and Kerala, during its theatrical run. In fact, Raj and co had barely done any promotions, choosing instead to let the content do the talking. And talk it did, as the film went on to become the highest grossing Kannada movie of 2025 (to date). Interestingly, now that it is on OTT, several comments have popped up, deeming Su From So highly overrated. This was also the case for Kantara in 2022, with netizens deeming it overrated after the OTT release.

Not everyone’s a fan of Su From So

“Overrated considering the hype I've seen, but a Light-hearted Comedy that Uses Superstition for Good,” wrote one user, while another said, “Su From So, It is unbearable, bizarre & humorless It might be relatable to coastal audience but definitely not enjoyable”. Several of the comments wondering how Su From So became such a big hit came from Telugu audiences, where the theatrical version had also not clicked. A very niche crowd watched the Telugu version, contributing a little over Rs 2 cr only.

Su from So revolves around the protagonist Ashoka (JP Thuminad), who pretends to be possessed to avoid being named and shamed for being a peeping Tom. While Ashoka hopes that the villagers will forget all about it the next morning, things only get worse for him when they are set to exorcise the spirit that’s taken control of him, a middle-aged woman from a neighbouring village called Sulochana.
