Su from So’s Raj B Shetty: Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty debuted in Malayalam cinema with Turbo last year, but the role did not have the intended impact

Raj B Shetty debuting in Malayalam cinema as the antagonist opposite Malayalam superstar Mammootty in Turbo was massive news back in the day. Raj must have seen something in the role and film to sign up, one thought. But then, when the film came out, reviews were far from encouraging, with many also wondering why Raj chose to be a part of it, given that the role was rather flat and didn’t offer him much to chew on.

Raj was asked about whether he took up Turbo because it was a Mammootty film during the promotions of his latest, Su From So, and he said that something in the script and not the cast is what drew him to the project. “The reason I selected Turbo was for a particular scene, which was finally not in the film. It had to be edited out due to the length of the film,” says Raj, without going into the specifics of the scene, in discussion with Filmy Focus.
This edit meant that Raj as Vetrivel Shanmukha Sundaram did not have much value add in the larger scheme of things. Had it been retained, it would have made a lot of difference to his narrative arc, but Raj says that he respects the creative choices that the team had to make.
Raj, who did three Malayalam films in quick succession, Turbo, Kondal and Rudhiram, with the latter actually the first he’d taken up, is back with another film for audiences in Kerala. This time, though, he’s brought a Malayalam dubbed version of a Kannada film he’s produced and acted in. Su From So, which marks the directorial debut of its leading man JP Thuminad was released in Kerala on August 1, and in its nearly 2 week run so far, it has made close to Rs 5 crore.

The Kannada original is a massive hit on home ground and continues to draw crowds in its third week. The film has grossed Rs 90 crore from its world-wide run so far. With Coolie and War 2 releasing this week, it remains to be seen if Su From So can make it to the Rs 100 crore club after all.
