The world of streaming has opened new avenues for filmmakers, allowing them to showcase their art beyond just a few hours of storytelling. However, as the world returns to normalcy, both theatrical and streaming formats need to coexist and complement each other in an industry that is constantly evolving and highly competitive.
Amazon MGM Studios, along with Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment, is taking a significant step in this direction with its latest offering, Superboys of Malegaon. Why? Because the Reema Kagti directorial is set to become the first Amazon-backed Indian film to have a theatrical release before landing on the streaming platform. You heard that right!
A joint production of Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby, Superboys of Malegaon is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti. Written by Varun Grover, the film stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora in lead roles. It tells the inspiring story of Nasir Sheikh and his team, who built a parallel film industry in the heart of Malegaon and successfully ran it. The movie is set to hit the big screen on February 28, 2025.
This Friday, Superboys of Malegaon will arrive in Indian theatres , and it has already become a hot topic of discussion. This strategic move by Amazon is designed to generate buzz around the project while simultaneously positioning it on the global map. After its theatrical run, the film will debut on Prime Video, with a release window yet to be determined. Typically, theatrical releases follow a 60- or 90-day window before streaming, but since Superboys of Malegaon is an Amazon Original, exceptions might be made. This strategy could also help the film generate additional revenue before its digital premiere.
Superboys of Malegaon is inspired by the acclaimed documentary Supermen of Malegaon. Speaking about the connection in an interview with Firstpost, Zoya Akhtar shared her thoughts:
“We saw the actual documentary, and I loved it. But the documentary focuses on the making of the film. A few years later, I was at a film festival in Delhi when I recognized Nasir across the room, and he recognized me. I went up to him, we started talking, and eventually became friends.”
She further added, “Over time, we stayed in touch. Whenever he came to Bombay, he would call me, and we met a couple of times. I was quite intrigued by his journey. He started sharing stories about his life, and I felt that Supermen of Malegaon was such a deeply moving story that it could have been adapted into a feature film. Superboys of Malegaon actually covers ten years of his life before he made Supermen.”
