If you’ve missed the recent news, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. James Gunn, speaking at New York Comic Con, revealed numerous updates about the DCU. He emphasized that the new DCU won’t have a single tone but will allow each project to have its own unique vibe, giving filmmakers the freedom to experiment and flourish. Gunn also confirmed that Rick Flag Sr. will be a major character throughout the DCU, serving as a key thread linking several projects. He is already confirmed for three upcoming works: Creature Commandos, Superman: Legacy, and Peacemaker Season 2. Additionally, Gunn announced that Alan Tudyk will have a role in Superman: Legacy. Below is a compilation of some of the biggest updates shared by the filmmaker.
Among the highly anticipated titles in Chapter One: Gods & Monsters, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow stands out. While no release date has been announced, James Gunn confirmed that filming for Supergirl will begin in 2025. Starring Milly Alcock as the titular character, the film will be directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. According to reports, the film is considered an unconventional take on the superhero genre. Gunn described it as "a completely different take on a superhero movie." Milly Alcock will first be introduced in Superman: Legacy before moving on to her solo film. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on a comic book run of the same name and will portray a jaded Supergirl who was raised on a desolate Krypton—a stark contrast to her cousin Superman, who grew up in a loving environment on Earth.
One of the most significant updates is that certain events from the DCEU will be incorporated into DCU canon. Ever since Gunn and Safran revamped the DCEU as the DCU, fans have wondered whether the storylines from the previous universe would carry over. James Gunn has now confirmed that some events from the DCEU will indeed be canon in the DCU. For example, Rick Flag Sr. from The Suicide Squad will return in the DCU. Gunn's approach ensures a smooth continuity while steering the franchise in a new direction.
Peacemaker Season 2 has been in the spotlight for the past couple of years, and James Gunn recently confirmed that production for the second season is in full swing. John Cena will return as the beloved superhero, and the filmmaker promised that the new season will push the boundaries of what fans can expect from the character. Gunn described the upcoming season as "very magical" and expressed excitement about its direction.
Superman: Legacy is arguably the most anticipated DCU movie right now, as it marks David Corenswet's debut as the iconic Kryptonian after Henry Cavill's departure. It is also the first live-action film under the new DCU banner. James Gunn revealed that the editing process for the film is progressing smoothly, and the team remains optimistic about its reception.
In addition to the films, a Green Lantern-based series titled Lanterns is also in development. Gunn revealed that the show will focus on intergalactic heroes and will have a grounded, gritty feel. He described it as "a very grounded and real series." Screen tests for the show have been completed, and filming is set to begin soon after October 2024.
