Director Jayaraj and superstar Suresh Gopi seems to have dropped the ambitious sequel of their cult film Highway for their latest venture Oru Perumkaliyattam. The actor, on Thursday, shared photos of his character’s look from the movie.

Suresh Gopi essays the character of Peruvannan in the movie, which marks their first collaboration after two decades. In a video shared by Jayaraj, the filmmaker said, “Suresh and I had brought out the film Kaliyattam in 1997 and now we are teaming up again for Oru Perumkaliyattam.”

The filmmaker said that this film has no connection to their previous movie Kaliyattam, which was based on Othello. “This will be a different experience,” said the director. It’s not clear whether the film is part of Jayaraj’s Navarasa series of films that has one more movie to round up the entire nine emotions. Suresh Gopi had starred in Adbutham, from the series, that was shot in 2006 and was released in 2021 through Roots Video OTT platform.

Meanwhile, the duo collaborating on Oru Perumkaliyattam means that the much-anticipated sequel of Highway is either put on hold or dropped altogether. Both Jayaraj and Suresh Gopi had announced that they were excited on the sequel of Highway last year.

The filmmaker had told OTTplay, “It will be a big budget, pan-Indian film as that’s how most such projects are being approached now. It will also be a commercial, mainstream movie that I will be doing after a long time.” Jayaraj had completed the script of the movie four years ago.

Suresh Gopi too said that the movie was inspired by a highway murder that happed in Vyttila a few years ago and follows the revenge spree of its antagonist across seven states. While it was pitched as a sequel, the actor said that his character from the original, Sreedhar Prasad, will not be part of the film but the “audience will see a different Suresh Gopi in the movie”.
