Actor Suriya, who was last seen in Kanguva, is working with filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj for his next film titled Retro. The film is slated for release on May 1. Ahead of this, the makers have been sharing interesting anecdotes and experiences from the shooting spots. In the latest, Retro makers recalled the time when Suriya shot for a jail set which was erected in Chennai.

When Suriya recounts living in a jail for Retro shooting

A significant portion of Retro takes place in a jail, for which a set was planned to be built in places like Shimoga Jail, the CSI Building in Thiruvallur, Tuticorin, and Cochin. However, Karthik Subbaraj decided to make a retro-style jail inside the Chennai BSNL office. With the efforts from the art direction department, the premise was transformed into a jail, with warden’s office, prison cells, a library, a kitchen, and a visitors’ area.

The makers recalled the first time Suriya entered the sets, and exclaimed how despite having been to the BSNL office many times, he could not recognise the place. “I’ve been coming here for years. How did you bring the Madurai jail here? Super ya, Karthi!” he said. Karthik, as always, gave full credit to the art team.”

The makers of Retro filmed action sequences and the song Kannadi Poove. “For five days, I felt like I was living inside a real jail. I experienced every moment, every emotion… and danced it all out,” Suriya said.
