Mammootty has been garnering a lot of praise from the members of the film fraternity from across the country for pushing the boundaries of Malayalam cinema. At 72, Mammootty is carving a niche for himself by playing unconventional roles, even as he continues to engage 'mass' audiences with over-the-top action entertainers.

Mammootty took everyone by surprise by essaying the role of a closeted gay in Kaathal – The Core, which is helmed by Jeo Baby of The Great Indian Kitchen fame. And the film has resonated with audiences across the country as many have expressed admiration for Mammootty's appetite for taking risks, despite his superstar stature.

The film has managed to exceed the expectations of the trade by grossing more than Rs 5 crore during its opening weekend in Kerala alone. The film is also doing well in Tamil Nadu.
