Suriya’s Karuppu misses Diwali, Pongal slots; now eyeing for summer 2026 release: Reports

It has been some of the lowest years for actor Suriya, who was last seen in this year’s Retro. Even as the film received mixed responses, the actor’s stark absence on the big screens in the last few years, have been a recurring talk among his fans. While Suriya announced his next to be Karuppu, the film is yet to get a release date, given all the biggies are slotting their schedules taking up the festive windows.

Actor Suriya, who was last seen in Retro, has signed a couple of projects. However, his next, Karuppu is yet to get a release date. Written and directed by RJ Balaji who is an actor himself, Karuppu was initially speculated to have a Diwali release. However, it looks like the festive season has already been occupied by young crop of actors with Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude and LIK, and Harish Kalyan’s Diesel announced for Diwali.

Further, the next major festive season, which is Pongal in January next year, has been fixed for Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan and it was also recently announced that Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Parasakthi will follow Jana Nayagan in a week’s time. This means, the festival dates have been taken by prominent stars, with only pooja holidays, Christmas and New Year left, if Karuppu makes are indeed looking to release this year.

However, as per fresh round of buzz on social media, Karuppu is expected to hit theatres sometime in summer 2026, replicating the Retro release. An official announcement on the release of Karuppu is yet to be made by the team.

What is Karuppu about?

Karuppu marks the first time Suriya will be working with RJ Balaji, who has previously directed films like Mookuthi Amman and Veetla Vishesham. It features Trisha as female lead, with cast members also including Yogi Babu, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Natarajan Subramaniam aka Natty, Anagha Maaya Ravi, and Supreeth Reddy.

The film is shot by cinematographer GK Vishnu, with Vikram Mor handling the action choreography of the film, R Kalavanan is the editor. Karuppu will have music by Sai Abhyankkar, who replaced AR Rahman in the film.
