Right from the days of winning the Miss Universe 1994 pageant to being a 47-year-old mother, Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen is an inspiration to people across generations. She has not only been vocal about various social issues but has also delivered remarkable performances in Bollywood movies, which, too, outline numerous issues existing in society.

Her upcoming series, Taali, too, speaks about a social issue prevailing in society. Taali is a series based on the life of transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant, and it is soon going to be released on JioCinema.

Speaking about the series’ creation, Sushmita told The Indian Express, "I knew when I came back to work it would be aap ye yeh role kar lo, woh kar lo (you do this role and that part). And you need immense holding capacity to say no. When I come back, it’s with a sense of responsibility; I want to headline a show or do an author-backed part. It has to be something solid. For that, you tell me, I will do three months of prep, do workshops, and unlearn. I wanted something like this."

Sushmita even revealed why it took eight years for her to make a comeback in the film industry. In 2015, she starred in a Bengali drama film titled Nirbaak.

“As a woman, and I speak for myself at least, there’s a lot of mother guilt, parent guilt. I am on a set, and I am waiting endlessly for XYZ to arrive. But I am not really working. Then I have a 9-6 shift, which is dragging to another 9 with no fault of mine. In that situation, I was neither a professional nor a mother. I am just wasting my time, and I didn’t want that. So, I decided... and it happened at the same time as Alisah was a baby. At that point, I was not really enjoying anything, not learning, I wasn’t motivated to go to work,” the 47-year-old shared.

Sen is the mother of two adopted daughters. She adopted her first daughter, Renee in 2000 while her second daughter, Alisah joined the family in 2010.
