A native of Tiruvannamalai, Sekar joined the film industry as assistant to director K Bhagyaraj. Subsequently, he made his debut with the 1990 film Neengalum Herothan. Through his career, Sekar crafted a kind of films majorly, that which showed the plight of middle-class families, and stressed the gender roles and dynamics between man and woman. His most famous films include Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, Naan Petha Magane, Kaalam Maari Pochu, and Viralukketha Veekkam among others.
