V Sekar, the Tamil film director, died on Thursday after a brief time of illness. He was 72 and is survived by his wife Tamilselvi and two children, Malarkodi and Karl Marx.

A native of Tiruvannamalai, Sekar joined the film industry as assistant to director K Bhagyaraj. Subsequently, he made his debut with the 1990 film Neengalum Herothan. Through his career, Sekar crafted a kind of films majorly, that which showed the plight of middle-class families, and stressed the gender roles and dynamics between man and woman. His most famous films include Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, Naan Petha Magane, Kaalam Maari Pochu, and Viralukketha Veekkam among others. He often collaborated with actors Khushboo, Vadivelu, Livingston, Vivek and others.
He had last directed the 2014 film Saravana Poigai and also had a brief television stint as writer, actor and director. Sekar's career faced a downward curve after his name surfaced in idol theft case sometime in 2015.
