Task Season 2: The Task was initially billed as a miniseries, but after the finale episode, show runner Brad Ingelsby spoke about the possibility of returning with another season

A few days ago, in a surprise move, HBO announced that it was renewing Task for a second season, upgrading it from miniseries status. The Mark Ruffalo show, by Mare of Easttown maker Brad Ingelsby, followed the actor as an FBI special agent in Philadelphia, tasked with leading a task force investigating a spate of robberies at drug houses.

Given that Task was initially meant to be a miniseries, the finale was perfectly sown-up, but turns out, Ingelsby is not yet done with Ruffalo’s agent Tom Brandis. In season 1, Tom headed a 4-member task force that included Fabien Frankel as Anthony Grasso, Alison Oliver as Lizzie Stover and Thuso Mbedu as Aleah Clinton, resources pooled in from different law enforcement departments. While Lizzie dies during an encounter with the season’s big bad guys, the outlaw motorcycle gang Dark Hearts, Grasso turns out to be the rat on the team, which leaves Aleah as the only possible member likely to join Brandis on a new adventure.
But then, given that the whole idea of setting up a task force involves getting members with different skill sets on board, Tom could be looking at a whole new team. This time, the best guess is that he will personally do the vetting of each member, to ensure there is no repeat of a Grasso situation. On the home front, Tom will be dealing with the return of his son Ethan on parole, who was serving time for killing his mother, after pushing her down a flight of stairs during one of his manic episodes.

Yet another possible returning cast member is Emilia Jones’ Maeve Prendergrast, whom Tom had given the money that her uncle Robbie had stashed away from the drug house raids. Ingelsby has even hinted at a Task and Mare of Easttown crossover, so it is still early days to speculate who will or won’t be back on the show.
