Mirai, according to audiences, is a visual spectacle. Social media is abuzz with comments about the phenomenal VFX in the film, which is said to be on par with Hollywood standards, leading man Teja Sajja clarifies that while they have, no doubt, used graphics, it does not extend to all aspects of the film. The locations seen in the film are not computer generated, he explains, adding that Mirai was shot at live locations, including Sri Lanka, Bangkok, Nepal, etc.

Teja Sajja on making an international standard film within budgetary limitations

In a conversation with zoom, Teja addressed the use of CGI in Mirai, given that the film was made on a tight budget for the scale they were attempting. The focus was on giving viewers a grand cinematic experience, for which, the actor said he’s tried to stretch himself beyond his limitations, to make something look bigger than what is actually possible of him.

“We wanted to make this film look on par with international movies. For that to happen within our budgetary limitations, we had to shoot everything live action. For instance, for the train sequence, we went to Sri Lanka and shot on a bridge. We also went to the Himalayas (Nepal), Bangkok, etc., and made sure that the film looks really big. Everything that you see in the film is done by us, not even with body doubles,” said Teja.

Having said that, the actor adds that Mirai does have a lot of VFX shots, but they are not involved in the locations. Instead, it was used to create the non-human creations, like the giant eagle, that they’d given audiences a glimpse of in the trailer. Teja adds that director-cinematographer Karthik Gattamneni’s visual storytelling sense went a long way in helping them achieve what they set out to do.
