Thandel is Naga Chaitanya’s latest film, featuring Sai Pallavi as the female lead. Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, this romantic drama is based on the real-life story of a couple and was made on a massive budget of ₹100 crore.

Thandel OTT platform details

After a successful theatrical run, Thandel is set to stream on Netflix from March 7, 2025. The film will be available in all South Indian languages as well as Hindi. Despite being released as a pan-India film, Thandel didn’t perform well in the Hindi market.

Even Aamir Khan, who launched the film’s trailer and praised Naga Chaitanya, couldn’t boost its reception in the North. Similarly, the film underperformed in Tamil, despite having a relatable storyline about a fisherman who gets arrested after drifting into Pakistani waters.

Thandel OTT rights fetch the makers a bomb

Netflix reportedly paid a whopping ₹55 crore for the digital rights to Thandel, which helped producer Allu Aravind recover a significant portion of the budget even before the film’s release. The movie also performed well at the box office, collecting ₹68 crore in share by the end of its theatrical run.

One of Thandel’s biggest highlights is the chemistry between Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi. This film marks a significant transformation for Chaitanya, who is usually seen in urban, stylish roles. His raw and de-glamorized performance in Thandel earned him critical acclaim, making it one of his career-best portrayals.

Chandoo Mondeti, who previously collaborated with Naga Chaitanya, added a strong romantic layer to the real-life story, making the film’s second half deeply emotional and impactful. Reports suggest that additional jail sequences set in Pakistan, which were removed from the theatrical version, will be included in the OTT release.

As Thandel gears up for its digital premiere, all eyes are on its reception in Hindi and Tamil. Will the film find a larger audience on Netflix? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates.
