In 1976, Yash Johar launched Dharma Productions, one of the most well-known companies in India, with the release of the film Dostana, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha. After that, his son Karan Johar took over the production house and started running the company smoothly.
Under Karan Johar, the studio produced box office hits including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Brahmastra, and most recently Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which have become staples in popular culture. Apoorva Mehta, the CEO, has been overseeing the business side of things for almost 20 years. He joined the company in 2005, following the death of Karan's father. In 2018, Apoorva became the producer and managing director of Dharmatic Entertainment.
Karan Johar shared a touching note for his best friend Apoorva Mehta as he bids goodbye to 2023 and wishes everyone a happy new year. Taking to his Instagram account and sharing a picture with Apoorva, he wrote: "When my father passed away in 2004… he left a void that perhaps can never be filled … on an emotional impulse I called my best friend @apoorva1972 who was based in the UK and very settled with his wife Bijal… I said “i need you … I have no family to help me build my fathers dream … Dharma productions” without even a pause he said “ I will be there “ "
Karan went on to express how Apoorva moved to India to assist Karan in establishing Dharma Productions, leaving everything behind. Subsequently, he expressed his gratitude to his best friend for supporting him during his darkest moments.
"My father would have been so proud of us … just knowing that we could keep it together and do our best to build his dream….love you and thank you! Happy new year to us and the entire @dharmamovies @dharma2pointo @dharmaticent @dcatalent families! You are all the reason we stand firmly on our feet!" KJo added.
