Director Matt Reeves' iteration of the iconic DC Comics superhero was met with equal amounts of scepticism and excitement upon its announcement and subsequent release of promo material.

The Batman made it to cinemas recently — on March 4 in India —and it is being lauded for being completely different from the usual superhero affairs.

The filmmaker recently spoke about the film's ending, where *spoiler alert* Riddler (Paul Dano), who's sent to Arkham Asylum, learns of Robert Pattinson's Batman foiling his grand plan to wreck Gotham city. After this, his neighbouring cellmate whispers, "What is it they say? One day you’re on top. The next, you’re a clown.”

This conversation seems to have sparked a new friendship, but who exactly is this cellmate because the film credits this character, played by Barry Keoghan as "Unseen Arkham Inmate," according to Variety.

Reeves was asked if the character is indeed who the fans think he is. "You’re right. It is the Joker," the director confirmed to Variety.

However, he quashed any likelihood of the character's appearance in a possible sequel.

"It’s not an Easter egg scene. It’s not one of those end credits Marvel or DC scenes where it’s going, like, ‘Hey, here’s the next movie!’ In fact, I have no idea when or if we would return to that character in the movies," said Reeves.

The Batman also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Penguin and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon.

The film has been well-received at the box office and has currently amassed approximately Rs 15 crore in India.
