AppleTV+ is all set to release its new limited biographical drama, The Big Cigar. It will offer viewers a true story of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton’s life, his courageous escape to Cuba. This 6-episode drama is both directed and executive produced by Don Cheadle.

When to watch The Big Cigar

Based on the acclaimed magazine article by Joshuah Bearman, The Big Cigar is coming soon on May 17, 2024, only on AppleTV+. André Holland has been cast in for the titular role of Newton, who is best known for Oscar-winning film, Moonlight (2016). The biographical drama also features an ensemble A-listers like - Alessandro Nivola and Tiffany Boone, the series brings to life the bold and fearless plan that unfolded, ending with Newton’s unexpected journey to freedom.

What is the story of The Big Cigar?

The story follows Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton's daring escape from the FBI to Cuba. Assisted by Hollywood producer Bert Schneider, Newton hatches a bold plan of a fake movie production. As the escape unfolds, the seemingly impossible scheme throws twists in every step of the way. Despite the constant obstacles, the story follows the truth, with some creative and genuine scenarios to make the viewers feel the drama.

About Huey P. Newton

Huey P. Newton was an African-American activist, and co-founder of Black Panther Party. The company’s main motto was to fight with the FBI to provide community services, and later growing into a Marxist group to advocate black empowerment. Newton was highly educated. He had a Ph.D. in social philosophy. He faced legal issues and controversies throughout his life. Despite all these, his contribution remains significant in history. He was brutally murdered in West Oakland by a member of the Black Guerilla Family and drug dealer named Tyrone Robinson. Relations between the Black Panther Party and the Black Guerilla Family had been drawn for nearly 20 years, prior to this incident.
