Leave Hollywood and Bollywood horror flicks aside. Here we bring you some mind-blowing details about the Spanish-language gothic horror film The Communion Girl. Set in the 1980s in Tarragona, this film uses some social themes. Although the story is not very scary, the time period feels quite real. Director Víctor García creates a believable set-up and the ending will make you feel like you are trapped in the film’s world.
The story begins with a teenager named Sara (Carla Campra), who has recently moved to a small town. Soon she realises that the place is suffocating with extreme religious beliefs and backward practices. After a wild night out at a club with her girl pal Rebe (Aina Quiñones), they face a local troublemaker while returning home. They narrowly escape hitting a ghost in a communion dress. After the spooky encounter, they find a creepy doll. Soon, Sara gets a weird infection in her body and sees some disturbing visions in broad daylight.
Sara begins to have nightmares of being forcefully drowned in a well by a horrifying ghostly creature. Although these scenes are pretty obvious and too cliche, they don't bore you as you find out that everything is linked to something weird that happened long ago. The fascinating backstory begins to unfold when Sara delves deep and discovers that she's not the only person in the town who has caught the plague. Rather, this illness has always attacked teenagers. The cause of this illness is symbolic.
However, after knowing this, Sara and her friends Debe and Pedro (Marc Soler) begin to dig up who was the Communion Girl on that road and what exactly happened to her. They get a lead that it's all connected to a Catholic church. What happens next?
While the plot may feel like that of a typical horror genre, the film’s exploration of superstitious beliefs offers a unique and relatable twist. This connection to folklore tales allows viewers to connect with characters’ experiences on a deeper level, even if the overall story structure seems somewhat ordinary.
Are you already hooked on the story? Well, watch The Communion Girl right away, as it's streaming on VROTT and is accessible through OTTplay Premium at an affordable price.
