National Award–winning director Nagesh Kukunoor helms the series, which is adapted from the best-selling book Ninety Days by investigative journalist Anirudhya Mitra. Kukunoor, Rohit Banawalikar, and Sriram Rajan are all members of the writing team. Kukunoor Movies and Applause Entertainment produced the series.
Examining the aftermath of the murder of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, the series adopts a procedural approach. Along the way, it covers intelligence lapses, surveillance initiatives, and international plots as the Special Investigation Team seeks retribution. The plot is based on actual facts and tries to follow the timeframe of the investigation as closely as possible.
The show's leading man, Amit Sial, plays D.R. Kaarthikeyan, the SIT chief at the time. Accompanying him are Sahil Vaid as SP-CBI officer Amit Verma, Bhagavathi Perumal as DSP Ragothaman, Girish Sharma as Radhavinod Raju, Danish Iqbal as DIG Amod Kanth, and Vidyut Garg as NSG Commando Capt. Ravindran. Gouri Menon, Shruthy Jayan, Anjana Balaji, B Sai Dinesh, and Shafeeq Mustafa are all part of the ensemble.
Talking about the series, Sial said in a statement that the show isn't just a crime procedural drama; it's about how invisible hands shape history. The role pushed him to confront the shadowy underbelly of authority, loss, and fairness. The actor said that it's a privilege to play a character who is grounded in honesty and strength.
For those who know of the assassination or are just learning about it, this is one of the earliest long-form dramatisations of the CBI-led investigation; other stories and documentaries have covered the event too.
Starting July 4, 2025, The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case will be available exclusively on Sony LIV for streaming.
