The Impossible Heir Story

Lee Jae-wook's new K-drama, The Impossible Heir, premiered recently on Disney+ Hotstar. The second episode, titled ‘Beginning’, takes forward the coming-of-age story of our power trio, Han Tae-oh, Kang In-ha, and Na Hye Won. Episode 2 begins with Han Tae-oh rejecting Hye-won's deal with an assurance that he won’t meddle in her schemes.

The episode also follows the dysfunctional Kangoh family and their relationship dynamics in the Bisunjae household. From the rebellious teenage daughter (Hui-ju) to the strict matriarch and the manipulative elder brother, the Kangoh family is an effluent but messy family, for whom business supremacy overpowers every relationship. In the second episode, we get to see some romantic rejections and an intertwined love triangle when Hye-won decides to pursue romance with the illegitimate heir (Kang In-ha) rather than the straight-faced Tae-oh.

It also showcases a new beginning for Han Tae-oh and Kang In-ha as they become employed at the Co-Prosperity Cooperation Center at the Kangoh Empire.

The Impossible Heir Review

The second episode, which recently premiered on the streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar, takes viewers into the intricate web of relationships. The trope of two friends falling for the same girl is uniquely executed without much jealousy but with an unwavering devotion to success.

Episode 2 also prepares viewers for the upcoming power play set in the Kangoh Group as friends-turned-partners Inha and Tae-oh execute their plan. Several twists and turns are anticipated to offer a compelling narrative in the coming week.

The trio’s character intro has already set the tone for the drama to go forward with their shady financial manoeuvres. For instance, the leading lady, Hye-won, is a headstrong and insensitive character who will stop at nothing to climb the corporate ladder. She even crushes her own heart and feelings to get closer to Inha, the impossible heir.

Despite the well-paced execution, a layered narrative with calculative characters, and the revenge drama plot, The Impossible Heir seems to miss out on the main point of inheritance in the first two episodes. The makers instead try to build a complicated love triangle. Another shortcoming is the overstuffed plot. In the recent episode, so much has happened that anyone who skips the first two episodes will miss out on a lot, facing difficulty in understanding the complex family dynamics.

The Impossible Heir verdict

The Impossible Heir’s second episode looks a bit rushed, as we see a 5-year leap at the end. However, what’s surprising is that the time leap is so sudden that it feels like something is missing. What adds to the flaws is the drama run-time; thankfully, this one is not more than 1 hour, unlike Episode 1. Despite these minor limitations, the K-drama seems to be a promising tale of revenge and power struggles between three underdogs and a giant conglomerate.

Starring Korean stars Lee Jae-wook, Lee Jun-young, and Hong Su-zu as the leading trio, The Impossible Heir is a thriller-revenge K-drama. It is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
