The series regularly features individuals such as Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorel's Paulino, Renika Williams, Gracie Lawrence, and Mia Rodgers. Reneé Rapp, a musician who has been a series regular playing Leighton for two seasons, will make a few guest appearances before leaving the series.

According to Deadline, Rapp has left the series that made her television debut. She didn't announce her departure as Leighton until December 2022, more than six months after the show's renewal for a third season.

Recap of Season 2 and Season 3 timeline

Gracie Lawrence, a student who has recently relocated to Essex, will play a regular role in the series. Deadline first reported that Mia Rodgers will play Taylor, a third-season foreign first-year student at Essex University. Additional cast members for Season 3 include Michael Hsu Rosen, Rebecca Wisocky, and Nabeel Muscatwalla. In Season 3, Roby Attal, Michael Provost, Ruby Cruz, and Devin Craig will all become part of the Essex student body. The trailer also teases special appearances from Tig Notaro and Alok Vaid-Menon.

Season 2 began following the girls' Fall Break at Essex and continued throughout their freshman year, exposing them to cold conditions and other new obstacles. At the beginning of the sophomore year, Season 3 will begin.

Season 2 saw Reneé Rapp's Leighton Murray openly pursue women and come out to her roommates about her sexuality. Despite her struggles with chlamydia, she persisted in her educational pursuits and even managed to get into her mother's sorority, Kappa Beta Rho. However, in the end, she turned down the invitation. Gracie Dzienny plays tennis player Tatum, with whom she began a romance; however, she reconciles with Midori Francis's Alicia by the season's conclusion.

Pauline Chalamet's Kimberly Finkle found herself in a difficult situation when she cheated on an exam, resulting in the loss of her scholarship to Essex University. Even worse, she steadfastly refused to inform her parents about the situation. She attempts to sell eggs, among other things, to earn money so she may stay at the school.

Additionally, she initiates a romantic relationship with Mitchell Slaggert's character, Jackson, a new student and native of Kansas. However, she comes to terms with her feelings for Canaan, the ex-boyfriend of Whitney's (Alyah Chanelle Scott), a coworker at the coffee shop, played by Christopher Meyer.

In the end, Whitney, initially hesitant due to her busy sophomore year schedule, decides to move into the Kappa house after witnessing Kimberly and Canaan kissing. Since it appears that the main four will no longer be living together in Season 3, this sets the stage for some potential conflict.

After Autumn Break, Bela Malhotra (Amit Kaur) launched the girls-only comedy magazine The Foxy. Bela Malhotra (Amit Kaur) forged a genuine relationship with her archrival Eric (Mekki Leeper), the editor-in-chief of The Catullan, a role that paved the way for the comedic careers of numerous Essex alumni. Regrettably, this relationship ultimately crumbled. Dan O'Connell, a late-night host and former Essex student, had Bela act as his student liaison. Unfortunately, this arrangement doesn't last long, as Eric snatches the internship from Bela during a frat party, and it later emerges that Bela had cheated on Eric by sleeping with Dan. By the year's end, she had applied to transfer schools, casting doubt on her future at Essex, and the Foxy had already decided to expel her.
