Chris Columbus, the filmmaker behind two Home Alone movies and the first two in the Harry Potter series, is back after a brief hiatus (his last was The Christmas Chronicles 2), with The Thursday Murder Club, a film adaptation of a bestselling Richard Osman novel from 2020 by the same name. The film has an eclectic cast on board, including Helen Mirren (Golda), Ben Kingsley (Teen Patti ), Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan (Black Adam ), David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Richard E Grant and many others.
What is The Thursday Murder Club about?
That The Thursday Murder Club was Netflix bound has been know for a while, and the streamer had even announced the release date more than a month ago – the film will begin streaming worldwide on August 28, 2025. But on May 29, the first trailer The Thursday Murder Club dropped, introducing audiences to the four pals at a retirement home, who have founded The Thursday Murder Club at Coopers Chase, to investigate cold cases. But then, a real-time murder drops in their laps and they begin digging into it.

Helen Mirren plays ex-spy Elizabeth, Ben Kingsley is ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim, Pierce Brosnan portrays ex–union activist Ron, and Celia Imrie takes on the role of ex-nurse Joyce. There are four other books in Osman’s series, so, rest assured there will be more films featuring this quartet.
In an official statement for Netflix, the director said that The Thursday Murder Club has the finest cast he’s worked with since Potter, with whom he’s made a “moving, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure”. “There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be happy. Thematically, it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people in a retirement community, who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional,” said Chris.
