Director Rathish Ambat and Murali Gopy’s previous venture Kammarasambhavam showed that the duo’s collaboration will always come with hefty layers that would test the audience’s intellect, and their latest venture Theerpu promises to be no different.
The trailer of the movie, which has Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith Sukumaran, Isha Talwar, Saiju Kurup, Hannah Reji Koshy and Vijay Babu, was released on Sunday through the social media pages of its stars, and it hints at a format that was recently familiarised to the Malayalam audience through Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal’s 12th Man.
The video hinted at a pivotal conversation between all the characters in a closed-room setting that would take the audience back to the incidents that led up to the discussion as well as impending judgment.
In a recent conversation with The Cue, the film’s scriptwriter Murali Gopy said that there aren't any lead characters in the film. “It has an ensemble cast playing roles that represent certain forces – be it Indrajith, Prithviraj, Isha Talwar, Vijay Babu, Saiju Kurup or Hannah Reji Koshy’s characters. That’s another layer to the movie, which is better left to the audience,” he explained.
The movie is “an experimental, mainstream film” that wasn’t initially planned for a big theatrical release, he said. “It was made because there was another avenue to showcase the movie… It has elements of satire as well as allegory, and would make for a good viewing experience,” said the filmmaker, who also worked with Indrajith recently in the Netflix anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s stories.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the movie’s director Rathish had told us that the film will also touch upon subjects of friendship, politics and history – all of which are represented in the trailer through its setting. Siddique, Sreelakshmi and Lukman Avaran also play pivotal characters in the flashback portions of Theerpu, which is set for a theatrical release on August 25.
