Thudarum: Mohanlal film's release date plans spark speculations about clash with Suriya's Retro

Mohanlal’s film with Tharun Moorthy, Thudarum, was one of the most-anticipated Malayalam films that was expected to release on January 30, 2025. However, the film did not release on the date, and there has been no official update on when the Mohanlal-starrer will be out in cinemas. But several Twitter handles have started claiming that Thudarum is likely to release in the first week of May, with fans speculating a clash with Suriya’s Retro which is set for release on May 1, 2025. Here’s everything about the latest update on Mohanlal’s Thudarum and the possible clash with Suriya’s Retro.

Thudarum release date plans

Several Twitter handles have been posting that makers of Mohanlal’s Thudarum are planning to release the Malayalam movie on May 2, 2025. This gives the movie a gap of over 30 days after the release of Empuraan, also starring Mohanlal. Thudarum is quite special for Malayalam movie buffs as it reunites Mohanlal with Shobana after a hiatus.

On the other hand, Suriya’s film with Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is slated for release on May 1, 2025. If Thudarum does release on May 2, it sets up a clash between the films of Malayalam and Tamil stars.

However, makers of Thudarum are yet to give an official update regarding the film’s release. But they have been releasing posters and songs from the movie, keeping the interest alive. The Thudarum team even tried a new strategy wherein the lead characters of Shanmugam and Lalitha, played by Mohanlal and Shobana, got their own Instagram accounts. 

Thudarum and Empuraan release

As Thudarum did not keep its release date of January 30, it meant that Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2 Empuraan becomes the first film of Mohanlal to release in theatres in 2025. The excitement for Empuraan is already very high with the director giving us sneak peeks into his world of the Lucifer franchise with character videos and posters. 

Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan is slated for its big release on March 27, 2025.
