Mohanlal fans were hopeful of a good start to 2025 for the actor, following the disappointment of his directorial debut Barroz. The actor would have Tharun Moorthy’s Thudarum, which reunites him with Shobana, and then Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2: Empuraan in quick succession. January 30 is when Thudarum was expected to be in theatres, but then it was pushed ahead, with no indication as to when it would be released. The buzz was that the makers had to take this call because the film’s primary post-theatrical businesses - OTT and satellite deals – were not in place.

Director Tharun had refuted all the rumours around the release and the lack of an OTT deal, stating that the team had never officially revealed a release date. The latest is that the film will be a summer of 2025 release, with May 1 heard as the tentative date. The delayed theatrical release of Thudarum is being attributed to the schedule of the streaming date.

According to reports, Thudarum has an OTT deal in place. However, the platform has slotted it for later in the year, owing to which the film cannot be brought to theatres now. The makers do not want too much of a gap between the theatrical and OTT outing and hence the decision to release it in May. The issue with this is that this delay will add a substantial financial burden on the producer, who has to make interest payments in lakhs, month-on-month, until the theatrical business starts kicking in.

The buzz on social media is that the streaming rights of Thudarum have gone to Sony LIV, but this has not been confirmed by the team or the platform. The highlight of Thudarum is undoubtedly the fan-favourite combination of Mohanlal and Shobana, who have worked togehter in films like Thenmavin Kombathu, Nadodikaattu, Minnaram and Pavithram. The last time they were seen together onscreen was in Amal Neerad’s Sagar Alias Jacky: Reloaded in 2009.
