Thug Life, the recently released Tamil film starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, hit theatres earlier this month and had courted much disappointment. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the film is a gangster actioner which was filled with controversy, thanks to Kamal Haasan’s remarks on the Kannada language. In fact, his words had gone to the extent that Thug Life was banned in Karnataka after the actor refused to apologise.

Now with Thug Life not received well, and Netflix, which brought the OTT rights of the film, wanting to release sooner than eight weeks, will the makers prepone the streaming debut or delay, given that the film might see a release in Karnataka soon?

Thug Life OTT release date:

We had earlier reported that Thug Life’s streaming rights have been bagged by Netflix. Initially, Kamal Haasan had revealed that there will be a gap of eight weeks between the theatrical and streaming release of the film. But soon after the film did not fare well, reports suggested that Netflix might shorten the gap and premiere Thug Life soon. Some reports say that they will release the film on June 27.

But with the ongoing legal battle in Karnataka, the recent update is that the state government has communicated with the Supreme Court that there is no ban on the film, and necessary protection will be given if the film is released there. So, if Thug Life gets a release date in Karnataka soon, it puts the OTT release date in jeopardy, given that the distributors want an extended theatrical run before it makes its Netflix debut.
