Thug Life is scheduled to hit theatres on June 5, and only days before the release of the film, it courted controversy. As part of promotions, Kamal Haasan and the team had conducted a press meet in Bangalore, where the actor had said that Kannada was born out of Tamil. This language remark triggered pro-Kannada groups who demanded an apology from Thug Life actor or face a ban on the film in the state. Refusing to seek an apology, the Papanasam actor had moved the court and subsequently issued a statement that did not make an apology, but only reiterated that his words were misconstrued.

Given the situation, the release of Thug Life on June 5 has been banned, with Kamal Haasan himself saying that they will be withholding the release for a week. As per reports and a few sources, this means the makers will be facing a loss of Rs 10-15 crore due to the decision not to release in Karnataka on June 5. Even as the amount is considerably significant, the Gunaa actor’s decision to do away with the Karnataka release has been met with both backlash from Kannadigas and support from Tamils.
