It looks like the clash of titans at Kollywood box office is inevitable, going by reports coming from a few trusted sources. It is almost confirmed that Ajith's Thunivu and Vijay's Varisu will be released around the Pongal festival, and it's just a matter of time before the news becomes official.
Thunivu, directed by H Vinoth, was supposed to hit the screens on Deepavali this year. Producer Boney Kapoor had confirmed the same a couple of times, but the film's shooting got extended owing to reasons best known to the makers. The film's first look was released a few weeks ago.
On the other hand, Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, was announced as a Pongal release in 2023 officially ever since its first look was unveiled on Vijay's birthday a few months ago. The movie's shooting is almost complete except for a song and a fight sequence.
Varisu was expected to hit the screens on January 13. A couple of days ago, there have been speculation doing the rounds that Thunivu, too, will join the date despite many predicting that both the projects may not head for a clash this time.
The latest is that makers of Varisu are planning to prepone their plans by a day. So, the Vijay-starrer is likely to arrive on January 12 whereas Thunivu will make it to the screens on January 13. If everything goes well, Kollywood fans will get to witness films of Ajith and Vijay clashing at the box office after nine years.
The last time movies of the two stars had a clash at the box office was in 2014. Ajith's Veeram and Vijay's Jilla took on each other for the Pongal festival. The last big BO clash in Kollywood was in 2019 when Rajinikanth's Petta and Ajith's Viswasam released on the same day for the festival.
