Kollywood fans started 2023 with a bang, thanks to the release of Ajith's Thunivu and Vijay's Varisu. After several speculations and change in plans, both the films were released on January 11 across the world. Exhibitors and distributors had a tough time allotting equal screens and number of shows to the two movies.
While Thunivu began its screening as early as 1 am across Tamil Nadu and at a handful of locations in Kerala, Varisu was allotted 4 am shows in various locations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Interestingly, both the movies opened to more or less same figures on day one in Tamil Nadu, though Thunivu registered a slight lead.
However, Varisu started taking a lead after a few days, thanks to its family-friendly genre which attracted audiences of all sections. Though the movie helmed by Vamshi Paidipally couldn't rake in the expected numbers in a territory like Kerala where Vijay enjoys a good following, it performed decently in Telugu states despite the onslaught of two big Tollywood releases.
It is a known fact that Vijay enjoys a clear lead in overseas markets when compared to Ajith and this has reflected in the collection as well.
After the end of their two weeks' theatrical run, Thunivu is said to have grossed 100 crores from Tamil Nadu while Varisu has grossed more than 115 crores. The worldwide collection of the Ajith-starrer and Vijay-starrer reportedly stands at around 170 crores and 250 crores respectively.
While Vijay has joined his next with Lokesh Kanagaraj recently, Ajith is expected to begin shooting for Vignesh Shivan's film soon. There are reports that both the stars are likely to have a box office clash again, but it looks like it's too early to confirm it.
