The viewers find it attention-seeking, with many claiming it is going the 'family drama' way rather than comedy. Another reason is that the singletons who understand Popatlal's frustration for not getting married, are questioning the makers' choice for not finding him a bride and shifting the focus to Tapu and Sonu's split. Tapu and Sonu's romance has been controversial since the very beginning of TMKOC. Back then, the makers were influenced by Balika Vadhu gaining popularity on TV. Thus, they had a whole segment dedicated to Tapu and Sonu getting married when they were children under the age of 18. This concept faced major backlash, with the female lead of the time Jheel Mehta also revealing her true feelings about the scene much later. Jheel was left wondering what is she doing on the sets and almost quit the show when the segment was introduced. She held on, but eventually quit the TV show. Many old faces associated with TMKOC are no longer a part of the show and the viewers also started questioning the quality once the original actors started quitting the TV show one-after-another. This incident is just one of the many.
