The 4th season of HBO’s True Detective, True Detective: Night Country, was recently released. The popular crime thriller features the formidable cast of Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. Issa López is in charge of directing and writing the most recent season, which is receiving criticism online for its weak conclusion.

However, what’s more shocking is that the original creator, Nic Pizzolatto, who contributed to the previous seasons, has been sharing these critical comments on his social media. Fans have reacted to this and some even lashed at the creator for being a "misogynist." Notably, this is the only season that Nic Pizzolatto is not in charge of directing.

True Detective: Night Country and the Nic Pizzolatto controversy

Nic Pizzolatto set the internet abuzz with rumours of him criticising True Detective's latest season, titled True Detective: Night Country. This despite his being associated with the series as an executive producer. His recent bashing has left fans puzzled, who have been wondering just why he is doing this.

While many wondered what happened to the creator and why he decided to share the critical reactions on his Instagram stories, others posted that they liked the new season and bashed the creator for spewing hate. Kali Reis, who headlines the series, also took to X (formerly Twitter) to take a sly dig at Pizzolatto.

The rise of Nic Pizzolatto

Nic Pizzolatto was the original creator of the first season of True Detective, which premiered in 2012. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, it was a breakthrough hit and won more than 10 Emmys in coveted categories. This skyrocketed Pizzolatto’s fame, and he continued with the second and third seasons, with the latter also getting rave reviews and critical acclaim, unlike the second season. However, the creator distanced himself from the fourth season and made headlines after he unexpectedly reposted negative and hateful comments from fans on the latest season finale.

Taking to his Instagram story and X (formerly Twitter), Pizzolatto reshared the critical comments, but all this backfired when fans started leaving hateful comments on his social media posts. This led him to turn off comments on his posts. On Wednesday, he shared a black-and-white picture with a lengthy caption on the “TRUE DETECTIVE AGGREGATE POST,” which requested to spread all negativity on that post.

Soon, fans flooded the post with comments. While some were highly critical of Pizzolatto's recent act, others expressed that they were among the minority and actually liked Issa López’s series.
