Dhanush's first release of 2023, Vaathi, turned out to be a successful venture in both Tamil and Telugu. The Venky Atluri directorial was released under the title Sir in Telugu. Sithara Entertainments, which bankrolled the film, simultaneously released both the versions on February 17.

The movie dropped on Netflix last Friday and opened to rave reviews from cinephiles who missed it on the big screen. The makers had announced a few days ago that the film has grossed 118 crores from across the globe after its theatrical run which ended recently.

The movie has now made an impressive number of views on the OTT platform as well. Its Telugu, Hindi and Tamil versions are currently trending at first, second and third positions respectively on Netflix. Apart from this, Vaathi is also trending in countries like Bahrain, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Oman, Singapore, Qatar, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

Fans of Dhanush, who were initially concerned about the film's output and lack of adequate pre-release promotions, are now excited with how the movie has entertained people from different countries. The star's performance, GV Prakash's music and Yuvraj's visuals were a few aspects which stood out in the project.

Vaathi is the second Tamil film to garner huge appreciation on Netflix this year after Ajith's Thunivu which hit the screens in January. Samyuktha, Tanikella Bharani, Saikumar, Samuthirakani, Sumanth and Ken Karunas played important characters in the movie which impressed critics and audience alike.

The makers unveiled a deleted scene and a BTS video after the OTT premiere recently to escalate the hype surrounding its digital release. A few days after its theatrical release, the project courted controversy when director Venky's comment on caste-based reservation drew flak from several people.
