For upcoming actor Jaiwanth, who has done a handful of films, it has become a dream coming to reality with his recent film Viduthalai: Part 2 in which he played a supporting character. It has been 15 years of struggle, when his first film Mathiya Chennai came out, in which he played the lead role. After starring in a couple of films, Jaiwanth found a solid footing when he was able to star in a Vetrimaaran film that serves as a shining star in his portfolio.
“It has been 13 years since I had asked for a chance to Vetri sir. My childhood friend Johnson knows Vetrimaaran sir and that is how I got introduced to him. I have met him a couple of times, and it was only now I got the opportunity to work in his films. He had remembered me asking for opportunities, and finally some years later, probably I would have come in his mind. Now, I am proud to have come under his school of acting,” Jaiwanth says.
In Viduthalai: Part 2, Jaiwanth plays one of the secondary antagonists, and appears in a fight sequence that breaks for the intermission. As the actor says how antagonists in Vetrimaaran’s films are always strong and notable, Jaiwanth hopes to not confine himself to one particular type of roles. “In Kaatu Paya Sir Intha Kaali and Mathiya Chennai, I played a lead role, whereas in Theerkadarishi he played a prominent character along with others. In case of villain, the role is challenging because the role is pitted against the hero,” Jaiwanth says as he expresses delight in acting for Ilaiyaaraja’s score once again after Mathiya Chennai.
Jaiwanth says that even as he spent 15 years in industry, the pressure in him persisted given the star cast of Viduthalai including Vijay Sethupathi, and Kishore, with Vetrimaaran’s direction and Ilaiyaraaja’s score. The upcoming actor adds that the learning process from the film was a lot. With stunt sequences by Peter Hein, Jaiwanth reveals how most of the fights were performed by himself barring a few which boosted his confidence level. Coming to lessons from Vetrimaaran, he says that an actor can come as clean slate, and the director would act it out for him. “He is a perfectionist, and there is more to learn from him. He is a university by himself, and after coming out from his school, the way you approach cinema and acting is totally different which can help in future films,” Jaiwanth says. The actor says that he is satisfied playing a role that is the driving force for the protagonist (Vijay Sethupathi) in becoming the Vaathiyar.
About working with Vijay Sethupathi, Jaiwanth says that the actor is helpful and caring. “He understands and sometimes also helps how we can carry forward the stunts, the number of punches and the way we can attack the other. We will have a discussion and we tried to make close to reality,” he says.
Wrapping up the conversation, Jaiwanth says he hopes to become a versatile actor and etch more prominent characters in the future. “I now have the courage to play any kind of roles, and it is because of Vetrimaaran sir.”
